“An adult male was helped out of the vehicle and taken to a local hospital in serious condition,” the tweet read.
Woods, 45, sustained moderate to critical injuries after rescuers removed him from his vehicle, according to Los Angeles County spokesman Henry Narvez. A tweet from the department earlier said rescuers used the jaws of life to get him out of the vehicle.
Woods suffered “multiple leg injuries” and was in surgery following the accident, according to Golf Digest, which cited a statement from Woods agent Mark Steinberg. CNN has reached out to representatives for Woods for comment.
Woods was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. CNN contacted the hospital for his condition.
Narvez said another car, not involved in the initial rollover incident, stopped after the crash and was behind.
Woods’ vehicle sustained significant damage, authorities said. The accident is under investigation.
Woods, a 15-time major champion, underwent back surgery for the fifth time in his career earlier this year.
Woods told sportsman Jim Nantz in a video posted to the PGA Tour Twitter feed on Sunday that he “felt good” but “a little stiff” after his last procedure. He said he needed to have another MRI.
Woods had previously had back surgery – a spinal fusion – in 2017 and made his comeback almost a year later. He then kicked off a remarkable comeback, winning the Masters in 2019.
Any progress over the past year has been hampered by yet another back injury and the pandemic, which has severely disrupted the golf schedule.
“We have been made aware of Tiger Woods’ car accident today. We await further information when he comes out of surgery. On behalf of the PGA TOUR and our players, Tiger is in our prayers and will have our full support as he recovers, ”said Jay Monahan, PGA Tour Commissioner
Tiger last played competitive golf at the rescheduled Masters in November. He also played golf in a father-son event called PNC Challenge in December in Florida.
Fixed: This story has been updated with the correct status of Woods’ vehicle.
