Medina Spirit wins 147th Kentucky Derby

The 3-year-old brown colt was trained by the legendary Bob Baffert, who becomes the most successful coach in Derby history with his seventh victory. Hall of Fame jockey John Velasquez notched his fourth victory in the Rose Race.

Medina Spirit entered the Derby with the sixth best odds at 12-1, winning second place Mandaloun, third place Hot Rod Charlie and Derby favorite Essential Quality in fourth place.

The Derby participation was 51,838 people. NBC commentators have said the Derby will be the busiest sporting event in the United States since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Preakness Stakes, the second race of the Triple Crown, is scheduled for May 15 at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.
